Save the stink the smart way!
Our favourite deodorants for teen girls to keep their hormones and pits happy!
Body odour (or B.O) can be one of the first signs that those puberty hormones have started to rage and you may notice your daughter is a bit stinkier than usual anywhere from 7 years of age onwards.
The odour is all thanks to what is known as the apocrine glands which are located in the hair follicles of her armpits and groin area. Although she has always had these glands they don’t actually “switch on” until puberty and when they do, oh boy will you know about it. One day you’ll just go to take a big breath of her in like you usually do, savouring her sweet smell as you hug it out and be met with a scent that is, errr.... not so sweet. That’s because these glands have started to produce a thicker type of sweat which also contains fatty acids and proteins. Bacteria that live in her armpits begin to feed off these secretions and as they process them, by-products are released which cause the pong.
Interestingly, girls don’t have as many apocrine glands as boys so you can expect that they might not smell quite as intense. As a high school teacher I can say with confidence that I have experienced the vast difference in the number of apocrine glands present in boys and girls. You try breathing after having a whole class of year 10 boys with no ventilation. Fresh air has never smelt so good.
In “Part 02: Blossom, Baby!” we chat through the details of choosing the right deodorant for your daughter with Chey Birch, the Founder of Black Chicken Remedies including whether an antiperspirant or deodorant is more efficient and things to look out for when choosing the right brand and product.
We agree with Chey when it was suggested that natural is best. Many deodorants and antiperspirants are known to contain hormone disrupting chemicals such as parabens, sulfates, phthalates, artificial dyes and fragrances to name just a few.
We thought we would share with you our favourite three options for teen girls.
Option One: Black Chicken Remedies Axilla Deodorant Paste
This deodorant paste works to neutralise the effect of bacteria that live in her underarms so that she can remain odour-free all day long. Made with pure essential oils, botanical extracts and a few other natural remedies to rid the body of unwanted smells and completely free from any hormone disruptors or toxic chemicals. Their deodorants are free from animal products and cruelty free. In addition, it is available in a range of great scents like Citrus, Vanilla, Alpha and their Signature Scent.
We’ve got a sneaky code for you too! Simply enter BCRXPIPPINGIRL at checkout to receive 15% off.
You can read more about and shop their amazing award winning product here. Black Chicken Remedies is also stocked a most major health food stores.
Option Two: NATIVE Deodorants
These guys are a little bit new to the market and based in the US but we have personally tried their deodorants and use them daily. They are aluminium, paraben and sulphate free and are transparent and informative about the ingredients that they do use and are cruelty free. Not only that, they have just launched a plastic free deodorant line which is pretty cool too!
Available in a HUGE range of scents, there is something to suit everyone.
Although their deodorants are slightly on the exxy side, there is an option to subscribe and save or to buy bundles which bring down the cost.

Option Three: Body Crystal or Myaura Organics from Woolworths
Okay, so life is busy and you’re standing in the Woolworths aisle and your girl needs new deodorant ASAP. There’s no time to shop online or visit the local health food store. This is a dire situation (for all able-smelling family members).
So what would be our pick?
We would personally go with either the Body Crystal Roll On which comes in at the cheapest option out of all listed at just $5.50. It contains very minimal ingredients and is paraben free although does contain Potassium Alum (not the same as aluminium but still a sulfate compound) and also has Parfum on the label, which as some may know can be a cover for a myriad of chemicals.
The other supermarket chain option would be Myaura Organics. This deodorant comes in a range of scents and is free from aluminium, parabens and synthetic fragrances. It is vegan friendly and not tested on animals.
If you have come across any other amazing brands, then we would love to hear from you! Otherwise happy shopping, happy pits, happy noses and happy hormones!

Hey guys!
Try ‘No Pong’ deodorant, it’s natural, beautifully scented, feels great on (it’s a cream) and seriously No pong!
I use it (mum) and I’ve started my tween on it as well, I’ve just bought it for all my staff as I love it so much.
Anyway, just a thought
